The Story Behind CSPBIRD’s Mission

At CSPBIRD, we strive to create pathways for social integration and peaceful coexistence. Our mission focuses on the importance of educating communities about shared human values, which are crucial for promoting mutual respect among diverse religious beliefs.

The Center for Sustainable Peacebuilding and Inter-Religious Dialogue (CSPBIRD) was founded by Most Rev. Dr. John Bogna Bakeni, Auxiliary Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Maiduguri in 2021, as an independent, not-for-profit, religious-based, research, training, advocacy, and capacity-building organization. Located in Maiduguri, Borno State, the Centre is dedicated to fostering mutual understanding and peaceful coexistence among people of diverse faiths and cultural backgrounds.
CSPBIRD was established with a vision to transform societal perceptions of religious diversity, viewing it not as a source of division but as a powerful force for unity. Guided by this vision, the Centre seeks to bring people of all faiths together to explore shared values, common goals, and the theological foundations of the world’s religions. By doing so, it aims to foster genuine understanding and work collaboratively towards a society grounded in justice and peace, where religion becomes the voice of humanity and the conscience of society.

Core Values

At CSPBIRD, our core values guide us to create a compassionate and inclusive society through mutual respect and understanding.

Our Vision

CSPBIRD envisions a society where religious diversity is celebrated as a gift and a unifying force rather than a tool for division. We aspire to build a world where individuals can live in peace and realize their full potential, free from exclusion or discrimination based on religious, ethnic, social, economic, or gender differences.

Our Mission

The mission of CSPBIRD is to promote mutual understanding across religious divides, foster religious tolerance, and encourage mutual cooperation for a sustainable and peaceful society. The Centre’s work is rooted in educating individuals and communities about the common and shared human, religious, and cultural values that can serve as pathways to social integration and peaceful coexistence.

Our Guiding Philosophy

As Rabbi Jack Bemporad wisely stated, “The only way is to understand one another, and that’s the whole point of our Center – to try to bring about better understanding and a feeling that there is some fundamental common humanity that we have to respect when dealing with the other.” This philosophy underscores our efforts to bridge divides and foster interfaith dialogue.
